# Handle vault scoring

> Vault works differently from every other apparatus. Gymnasts may perform one or two vaults, and the meet organizer decides how those scores combine.

On bars, beam, and floor, there's one routine and one score. Vault breaks that pattern. A gymnast might perform two vaults, and the way those two scores feed into all-around and the vault apparatus ranking depends on the competition settings. This page covers how that works and how to enter vault scores correctly.

## Prerequisites

* You are entering scores through the [Judges Companion app](/scoring/enter-scores-judges-companion.md) or the [admin interface](/scoring/enter-scores-admin.md).
* The meet organizer has configured the vault scoring defaults for each level.

## Vault scoring decisions

The meet organizer picks one option for all-around and another for the vault apparatus. The level supplies the defaults copied into every new competition:

| Decision              | How it works                                                                             |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **One Vault Only**    | Only the first vault counts in that ranking. The second vault, if performed, is ignored. |
| **Two Vault Average** | Both vaults are scored, and their average is used in that ranking.                       |
| **Two Vault Best**    | Both vaults are scored, and the higher of the two is used in that ranking.               |

The defaults are set at the level, not the meet. Each competition stores its own copy, so existing competition results do not change when a level default is edited later.

## Entering two vault scores

### In the Judges Companion app

1. Enter the first vault as you would any other score: D score, E deductions, neutral deductions.
2. Submit the first vault.
3. Tap **Enter Score**.
4. Enter the second vault's D and E scores.
5. Submit both.

### In the admin interface

1. Enter the first vault score in the scoring section.
2. Add the second vault score in the second vault section below it.
3. Save. Both scores are stored together.

## How vault scores are calculated

Each vault is scored individually:

* **Start Value** = Initial Execution + Difficulty + Bonus
* **Final Score** = Execution Score + Difficulty + Bonus - Neutral Deductions

For the all-around total and vault apparatus rank, the system applies the separate decisions stored on the competition.

## Second vault details

The second vault has its own score ID (the first vault's ID with a `_2` suffix). It can be revoked independently of the first vault. If the second vault is revoked, the system falls back to one-vault-only scoring automatically, so the gymnast's all-around total still works.
